A veneer is a thin shell of Emax glass ceramic bonded to the front face of the tooth. Only a fine layer of enamel is smoothed from that one surface, so the tooth underneath stays almost entirely intact. Best for healthy teeth that need reshaping, closing small gaps or brightening.
A crown covers the whole visible tooth, so the tooth is reduced evenly on every side to make room for it, roughly the thickness of a fingernail. The root and the core of the tooth stay. Best for teeth that are worn, chipped, heavily filled or too dark for a veneer to hide.
