Do I Need a Consultation Before Dental Treatment in Turkey?
Yes, you should always have a consultation before you fly, but it does not have to be in person. Veneers or crowns on healthy teeth can usually be planned from photos. Implants, missing teeth and full-mouth work need an X-ray or 3D scan first, and ideally a face-to-face chat in the UK.
This guide explains which consultation fits your case, what a proper one should cover, and exactly what happens when you see us online or at our office in Leeds.
Quick answer · Updated
Everyone needs a consultation before dental treatment in Turkey. Photos online are usually enough for veneers or crowns on healthy teeth. Implants, missing teeth, old root canals and full-mouth cases need an X-ray or 3D scan before you fly. UK Smiles consultations are free, online or at our office in Leeds.

Which Consultation Do You Need?
The question is not really whether you need a consultation. Every good clinic plans your treatment before you book a flight. The real question is what kind, and that depends on what is happening under your teeth.
Find your case below.
-
Route 1
Photos online
Usually enough for
- Veneers on healthy teeth
- Crowns on healthy teeth
- Changing colour or shape
- Replacing old veneers or crowns
Three smile photos through the quote form. The dental team plans from them and checks again in person on day one in Antalya.
-
Route 2
X-ray before you fly
Recommended for
- One or a few missing teeth
- Single implants
- Old root canals
- Gum problems or loose teeth
A panoramic X-ray shows roots, bone and old fillings that photos cannot, so the plan and price hold when you arrive.
-
Route 3
3D scan and a face to face
Strongly advised for
- All-on-4 or All-on-6
- Full-mouth implants
- Bone grafts or sinus lifts
- Very worn or failing teeth
A 3D CT scan measures the bone, and a consultation in Leeds lets you talk through the options and the two trips properly.
Not sure which route you are on? That is what the first message is for. Tell us what you want to change and send your photos, and the team will tell you honestly whether photos are enough or whether an X-ray should come first.
So what should actually happen in that consultation?
What a Proper Consultation Covers
Whether it is over WhatsApp or across a table in Leeds, a consultation before Turkey should leave you with no big unknowns. At UK Smiles it covers six things.
- What you want to changeColour, shape, gaps, missing teeth, or teeth that hurt or move.
- Whether your teeth are healthy enoughDecay, gum disease and old root canals all need sorting first.
- The right treatment, tooth by toothVeneers, crowns or implants, and which teeth are left alone.
- Whether you need an X-ray or scanAnd if so, where and when to have it.
- How many trips and nightsCrown and veneer packages include five nights in Lara; implants usually mean two trips.
- A written plan and priceWith hotel and transfers included, and nothing to pay up front.
If any of these are missing, you are being sold a trip, not a treatment plan. Our guide to reading a Turkey teeth quote line by line shows what the written plan should look like.
Online, in Leeds or in Turkey: How They Compare
With UK Smiles you can start a consultation in three places. Most people use two of them: online or in Leeds first, then a final check in Antalya.
| Online | In Leeds | In Turkey | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where | From home, through the quote form | Joseph’s Well, Leeds LS3 1AB | The clinic in Antalya, on your first day |
| Cost | Free | Free | Included in your package |
| X-ray or scan | Not included, photos only | Next door at CT Dent if your case needs one | Panoramic X-ray included |
| Who you speak to | Patient coordinators, with the dental team assessing your photos | The UK team, and a dentist from the clinic on visiting days | Your treating dentist |
| What you leave with | A written plan and price | A written plan and a fixed price | The final plan, checked tooth by tooth |
| Best for | Cosmetic cases, or if Leeds is too far | Implants, full-mouth cases, or anyone who wants to meet us first | Everyone: it is the final check before anything is done |
The consultation in Antalya is not optional, and it should not be the first one. It is there to confirm a plan you already agreed at home, not to build one from scratch while you are sitting in the chair.

When You Need an X-ray or 3D Scan First
Photos show the outside of your teeth. They do not show roots, bone, old fillings or infection, and those are what decide whether a plan works.
There are two kinds of scan you might be asked for:
Panoramic X-ray (OPG)
One flat image of every tooth, root and the jaw. Quick, and enough for most crown, root canal and single implant questions.
3D CT scan (CBCT)
A 3D picture of the bone, measuring its height and width. Needed to plan All-on-4, All-on-6, bone grafts and sinus lifts.
CT Dent is an independent scanning company that lists 14 dental scanning centres on its website, from Glasgow to Southampton, so you do not have to come to Leeds for an X-ray. The team will tell you where your nearest one is.
If you are planning implants, our full-mouth implant packages page explains how the scan feeds into the two trips and the price.

Why It Matters Once You Are Home
A consultation is not only about planning the treatment. It is your first look at who will be there when you get back.
93%
of UK dentists surveyed by the BDA were concerned about continuity of care after treatment abroad
86%
had treated patients whose treatment abroad had gone on to cause problems
Source: British Dental Association survey of 1,000 UK dentists.
The BDA’s advice is to find out before you go what to do if a problem appears after you return. A consultation is the best time to ask.
With UK Smiles, the same team you met before your trip handles your UK aftercare: photos and videos sent to the dentists, X-rays arranged in the UK where needed, and a written guarantee on every treatment.
Six Questions to Ask at Any Consultation
Whoever you book with, us included, ask these before you agree to anything. For the wider checks on the clinic itself, see how to choose a reputable dental clinic in Turkey.
Which teeth are getting what?
Veneers, crowns or implants, tooth by tooth, and which teeth are left alone.
Do I need an X-ray first?
And if not, why not. A good answer depends on your teeth, not on the price.
What could change on the day?
For example, a tooth that needs a root canal before it can be crowned, and what that costs.
How many trips, and how long?
Implants usually mean two trips, with a few months of healing in between.
Who looks after me back in the UK?
A named team, a UK office, and what happens if something needs checking.
What is guaranteed, in writing?
How long the warranty is, and what it covers.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do I need a consultation before dental treatment in Turkey?
Yes, always, but it does not have to be in person. For veneers or crowns on healthy teeth, an online consultation from photos is usually enough. For implants, missing teeth, old root canals or full-mouth work, you should have an X-ray or 3D scan first, ideally with a face-to-face consultation in the UK.
-
Can I have a consultation for Turkey teeth in the UK?
Yes. UK Smiles has an office at Joseph’s Well in Leeds, about ten minutes on foot from Leeds railway station. Consultations are free and by appointment, and dentists from the clinic in Antalya visit regularly. If Leeds is too far, the same consultation can be done online from your photos.
-
Is an online consultation enough for veneers in Turkey?
For veneers or crowns on healthy teeth, usually yes. Photos show the shape, colour and spacing of your teeth well enough to plan and price. The dentist then checks everything again in person, with an X-ray, on your first day in Antalya before any work starts.
-
Do I need an X-ray before getting implants in Turkey?
It is strongly recommended. An X-ray or 3D CT scan shows how much bone you have, which decides whether you need a bone graft or sinus lift and how many implants are possible. Without one, an implant price is only an estimate.
-
How much does a consultation cost?
A UK Smiles consultation is free, whether it is in Leeds or online, and there is no obligation to book. If your case needs an X-ray or scan in the UK, the team will tell you what it involves before you agree to anything.
-
What should I bring to a Leeds consultation?
Any X-rays or dental records you already have, a list of what you would like to change, and a friend or partner if you like. If you are thinking about implants, bring details of any medication you take.
-
Will my plan change when I get to Turkey?
Usually not, if it was planned from an X-ray or scan. Every plan is checked again in person on day one. If the dentist finds something that changes it, you hear about it first, with the reason, before anything is done.
The easiest first step is the free online consultation. Answer a few quick questions and send your photos, and the team will tell you which route you are on, what you need and what it costs, in writing.
