What Accreditation Should a Turkish Dental Clinic Have?

The 5 layers are the Ministry of Health facility licence, the international health tourism authorisation, the dentist's own registration, JCI accreditation and ISO 9001 certification. The first three are regulatory; the last two are voluntary quality marks. Each is checkable, and each checks something different.

Which of those five is non-negotiable?

Every dental clinic in Turkey needs an operating licence from the Ministry of Health, issued through the provincial health directorate, before it can treat anyone. The licence covers the premises, equipment and staffing of the facility, and legitimate clinics display it or produce it on request without theatre.

The dentists are licensed separately from the building. A practising dentist in Turkey holds a dental degree recognised by the state and registers with the regional dental chamber under the Turkish Dental Association, the profession's national body.

Two practical checks follow. First, the licence should name the same legal entity you are paying, because some "clinics" are marketing brands renting chairs in someone else's facility. Second, you should know the name of the dentist treating you before you fly, not discover it in the chair.

The international health tourism authorisation is a separate Ministry of Health permission that any Turkish facility treating overseas patients is required to hold. It was introduced under Turkey's health tourism regulation in 2017, and a stricter version of the rules came into force in April 2025.

The updated rules raised the bar in ways that matter to a UK patient. Authorised providers must run an international patient unit with foreign-language support, register on the state's HealthTürkiye portal, and carry complication insurance for surgical procedures, with oversight and performance checks handled through USHAŞ, the Ministry's international health services company.

The regulation also points facilities towards national accreditation through TÜSKA, Turkey's healthcare quality and accreditation institute, with requirements phasing in through 2026. You do not need to memorise the acronyms. You need one question: does the clinic hold the health tourism authorisation, and can it show you.

Impressed by badge walls in reception photos?

JCI and ISO 9001 inspect systems, not smiles. Both are genuine marks with real audits behind them, and both are routinely misunderstood on clinic websites, occasionally on purpose.

Joint Commission International is the international arm of the US hospital accreditor, and it surveys organisations against patient-safety standards on a three-year cycle: infection control, medication safety, surgical protocols, record keeping. In Turkey its accreditations sit overwhelmingly with large hospital groups rather than high-street dental clinics, so a small clinic displaying a JCI logo is often borrowing the status of a partner hospital. Ask which organisation holds the accreditation, then check the name in JCI's public directory.

ISO 9001 is a quality management standard, and ISO itself certifies nobody. Independent certification bodies audit a business's documented processes, complaint handling and record keeping, then issue a certificate carrying a number, an expiry date and the body's name.

It says the clinic runs consistent processes. It says nothing about whether the dentistry is good, which is why it belongs at the bottom of this list rather than the top.

Verification takes one email and about twenty minutes, and a good clinic makes it boring. Ask for the documents, then check the details against sources the clinic does not control.

1. Ask for the Ministry of Health licence and the health tourism authorisation, and match the legal name on both to the name on your quote.
2. Check the clinic appears on the official HealthTürkiye portal.
3. For any JCI claim, search the accredited organisations directory on JCI's website for the exact organisation name.
4. For ISO 9001, ask for the certificate number and the certification body, then look the certificate up on that body's register. A certificate from a body accredited by TÜRKAK in Turkey or UKAS in the UK carries more weight than one from a logo mill.
5. Ask for your named dentist and their chamber registration, and search the name independently.

The reaction to these requests is itself a finding. Clinics with real credentials send PDFs within the day, because they field these questions weekly. Clinics with website badges change the subject to discounts.

We would rather you did this to us than take our word for anything, which is why we keep the clinic's credentials in the open: certificate numbers, named dentists and the licence on the wall you will walk past on day one.

Accreditation cannot tell you whether the treatment plan is right, and a licensed clinic can still recommend twenty crowns where four veneers would do. Certificates audit systems and premises; they do not sit in on the consultation.
