John’s story

John had lost many of his teeth, and most of the ones left were broken down and decayed, so there were large gaps whenever he smiled or spoke.

His before photos show how much had gone: only a handful of upper teeth were left, and those were broken and stained, with the gum showing between them. It is the kind of mouth that changes how someone holds their whole face. In his after photo the smile is full again, his lips sit properly over his teeth, and the warm A2 shade means nothing about it looks new or out of place for a man with a grey beard.

He wore temporary teeth first while everything settled, then had his permanent zirconia crowns fitted. Zirconia is strong and hard-wearing, which suits a full rebuild like this.

He chose a natural design in shade A2. The result is a full, even smile in a warm, believable shade that suits his face.

The design choices

Why John chose shade A2 and a natural design

Every UK Smiles patient picks her own shade and design with the dentist before anything is made. Here is what John’s choices mean and why they suited her.

The six most popular shades are shown here. The full chart runs to more than 20, so there is a match for every complexion.

A natural, slightly warmer shade, close to healthy untreated teeth. Often chosen when a few new teeth need to match the patient’s own, or for a deliberately understated result.

Why it suited John: A2 is a soft, warm shade. For John it gives a clean, healthy smile that sits naturally with his skin tone and age, rather than a stark white that would look out of place.

Design

Natural

  • Chosen

    Natural

Like your own teeth, on their best day

Centrals a touch longer than the laterals, softly rounded corners, canines with a gentle point and a smile line that curves with your lip. Small differences between teeth are kept on purpose: that is what reads as real.

  • Soft

    Rounded, gentle, friendly

Fuller, more oval teeth with rounded edges all the way along and no sharp corners anywhere. The smile line curves gently and the canines are softened rather than pointed. Warm rather than striking.

  • Hollywood

    Square, straight, bold

Squarer teeth with straight edges, all the same length, sitting in a flat, even line. Corners are crisp and the canines are squared off to match. Symmetrical and unmistakably done, for people who want the change to show.

Each tooth is shaped with the small variations real teeth have: slightly rounded corners, a soft curve along the smile line and a little translucency at the biting edges. The result looks like a great version of your own teeth rather than a row of identical white blocks.

Why it suited John: The natural design gives each tooth its own shape and softer edges, so a full rebuild still looks like real teeth rather than a uniform set.
